Let me break this down as simply as I possibly can. Trayvon was at his father’s house when he decided to go to the convenience store down the street to get skittles and iced tea. On his way back George Zimmerman called 911 because he thought Trayvon looked “suspicious”. The 911 dispatcher specifically told him NOT TO FOLLOW TRAYVON and that POLICE WERE ALREADY ON THE WAY. This 28 YEAR OLD, ARMED MAN decides to ignore the 911 dispatcher and follow 17 YEAR OLD Trayvon IN HIS CAR.
After following him for a while, George Zimmerman decides to get out of his car and confront Trayvon. They then (allegedly) get into a fight and George Zimmerman, the 28 YEAR OLD, ARMED, GROWN ASS MAN decides to SHOOT TRAYVON IN THE CHEST AND KILL HIM. When the police show up, HE ADMITS TO SHOOTING AND KILLING TRAYVON. THE POLICE LET HIM WALK AWAY, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
How in the hell can you people defend that? He completely ignored the instructions of 911 dispatch, followed a kid in his car, and then shot and killed him in cold blood. At the very fucking least he should have been taken into police custody for questioning. What happened to Trayvon and how the police handled it makes absolutely no fucking sense. Anyone with half a fucking brain should be outraged at the fact that they are letting this man get away with murder. If you are defending George Zimmerman, you are defending a murderer. You are condoning his actions. You are upholding the white supremacist system that says Black children are inherently suspicious and that everyone has the right to follow and kill them.
And you can’t honestly say that if a black man had shot a white teen he wouldn’t have been in cuffs that very night. This story is appalling. I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am.
We should all know by now that when a white girl with a highlight-streaked mullet starts off a video with “I am a racist”, it’s going to be her being blatantly racist yet trying to pass it off as “ironically” funny Avenue Q racist and then trying to discredit and put down people who are actively interested in calling out racism and/or not being oppressed by racism by calling them “divisive” or “unfun” or “judgemental” (“you can’t call me a racist omg that is racist you don’t know me you don’t know what’s in my head sooobbbbbbb”).
A few clarifications out the gate-
- “Gay”* and “Muslim” aren’t races
- White Italians cannot and do not experience racism/racial oppression.
- White people making general statements about their own kind is not on par with white people making racist statements about POC. The first is not racism, for one.
OK, so the video continues and she, of course, makes ignorant blanket statements. Then she poses the question- “Are these observations racist?”,to which the answer is a resounding “YES”.
Lemme break down how for ya!
Because of your racism, dear white girl, you made generalized statements about races and groups of people that weren’t necessary. I mean, why mention the race of the people who recycle cans, huh? Because you “noticed it” ? Chances are there are ten times more white dudes in your neighborhood that stand on street corners looking for work, or collect cans for money, but your ass noticed the POC. Racialized confirmation bias is a ugly form of internalized racism that often informs the more overt kind. “It can’t be racist if I simply percieved what I saw” chuckles the bigot, never realizing how she was seeking out the racialized generalizations in the first place. Even if you observed that there really was more POC doing something, why mention their race?
Now if to that you answered “well why not?”, I ask you this-“What happens to these stereotypes and observations after they’ve been made? Do they translate into obnoxious mass generalizations? Do they translate into harmful action? Do these negative stereotypes harm the people they’re generalizing about?”.
White people-NO: White people in a supremacist culture do not suffer negatively from stereotypes or generalizations about their whiteness or white identity. They have never been systematically abused or discriminated against, let alone based on stereotypes or hatred of their whiteness. Stereotypes and generalizations have not been used to discredit them culturally, socially, educationally, in the job market, in government, everywhere. Stereotypes and generalizations have not lead them to be hunted down and killed.
POC-YES: All those aforementioned things have happened to POC because of these generalizations and stereotypes. We have been mistreated, abused, discriminated against, and killed because of piss-poor, negative, racialized ideas about us and our culture. They actually cause harm. So no, racism & Islamophobic/Anti-Arab bigotry are not comparable to “Italian ppl” jokes, nor are these bigoted statements all the sudden OK simply because your racist mind “perceived” inane generalizations.
The ones “causing the most dividing between people in the world” aren’t those who know what the fuck’s up and stand up against racism and other forms of bigotry, it’s you, dear mullet-haired white girl. The “Token Girl/Gay/Black/Oppressed” friend who plays Uncle Tom to the supremacist culture. The petty bigots who’d rather hold on to their shitty statements and their horrible “OMG but I OBSERVED IT” derailing bullshit, who want to ignore and have the privilege to ignore how they feed the supremacist culture, how they further push us into silence with their ignorant white bullshit.
“Don’t react else you’ll confirm their ignorance” is a shitty way of silencing us, too, of telling us to keep in line, to not act “niggardly”, like “cunts”, like “bitches”, like “dykes”. AKA to not challenge the supremacist culture. If your friend reacts to you calling out his homophobia (yes, needlessly calling out “THESE FLAMBOYANT GAY DUDES” is homophobic) like that, he’s a misogynist homophobic dick. He’s not right in trying to silencing you by calling you a bitch, and you aren’t “justifiably” a bitch ever, let alone when you’re doing the right thing and calling him out for being a fucking asshole.
Sit down, white girl. You’re a racist.
*when gay white people thing being gay is the same as being POC 2012
Because we don’t actually understand what experiencing racism is like…because…and here it is…no matter how much we want to say otherwise…we don’t actually experience it.
No we don’t, white folks. We don’t.
This is correct^ and also, we feel better about playing the role of a victim than accepting that whiteness is oppressive. It’s easier. It doesn’t challenge us. We don’t have to think to feel like victims. And we’ve always been told that we’re victims too, it’s engrained in there. Equality = white victimization. Everything about racism is blaming the other people for what we do. Racism doesn’t work unless you can pretend that you have a reason for it, albeit a bullshit one.
Too true. So many White folk want to revel in perceived victimization, not actual discrimination—if they could fathom what being the target of racism actually feels like, they’d run away screaming.
Killing them with a smile, one dumb sticker at a time.
Bootstraps and racism.
That’s a sucky analogy. I guess it’s supporting affirmative action? Look, the people still riding the success their ancestors had during the slavery period (they’re ever thinning) would have an advantage whether we had affirmative action or not. Affirmative action targets the borderline applicants to colleges and jobs…and favors minorities. Those with the unfair step aren’t borderline. The applicants are on equal ground and do have equal opportunity. Yet the minority gets preference. Still reverse discrimination.
Uhhhhhhhh… white people are riding on the privilege left over from slavery and extreme racism.
Affirmative action seeks to even out the playing field: because of racist and impacts still felt from racist laws, racial minorities are often in lower socioeconomic groups than white people. Being in a lower socioeconomic group often means living in worse neighborhoods and going to worse schools. Racial inequalities are not over, and denying their existence will only perpetuate their existence.
No offense. But I’m more or a minority in todays society than most african americans and women. Because I’m a 20-something white male I get passed over for jobs sometimes based solely on my skin color because of affirmative action. Now obviously there’s still parts of the world out there where these minorities are still on bottom but those are few and far between. I mean come the fuck on. We’ve got an african american president. So I think it’s time to drop the whole woe is me thing. Not to mention Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X would roll over in there graves if they saw the way most african americans acted. Yeah, you can blame that partly on the educational system in lower income areas. But I don’t see many rappers spreading there wealth around to help inner-city african americans realize there true potential. Instead they spew shit about bitches and hoes and making that green. It’s no surpirse why most inner-city african americans act they way they act. Look at the people they idolize.
^^^ LOL OMG WHAT
so. much. fail.
I had to leave tumblr for a couple of hours because this was so goddamn ridiculous. I’m back now and yep, still fucking ridiculous.
There is a difference between white supremacy and white privilege. If someone calls you out on white privilege that does not mean you’re a white supremacist, it only means check your privilege. It is not my job to educate you on your privilege, and it is not your place to tell me what I should and should not be offended by.
