Follow up post re: MRAs and Family Law/Parenting

    face-down-asgard-up:

I left a big point out in my previous post, mostly because I was blogging from work ( shhh! don’t tell. ).

When MRAs starting talking about father’s rights, family law reform, etc. I want you to pay special attention to the things they say. You will notice a theme.

The theme is: controlling women. MRAs don’t really want improved parental rights. What they want is another way to control and victimize women. I have seen these discussions over and over again.

Every time some bro whines because “What if I want to be a dad and she wants an abortion? I should be able to have a say!” What this translates to is, “I don’t care what she wants. I don’t care about her body, health, or life. I care about being able to force my wants on her.”

Then there are those that will say, “Well, I’ll take her to court if she won’t let me X, Y, Z when it comes to my kid!” What this translates to is, “I can’t be a mature adult and suggest we try to settle this dispute amicably. Instead, I will threaten her with expensive legal action that will take time away from her job and life.”

All of this talk about how it’s so unfair that a woman ( sorry that this is ciscentric. Not only women can have children. ) can decide to abort or that a woman is receiving child support payments. All of it is really buttfrustrated sexist, misogynistic little assholes upset over the fact that they can’t control a woman’s choices. So they use threats, emotional blackmail, unnecessary legal action, and other means to desperately try and control these women who DARE to try have some control over their own lives and the lives of their children.

Rarely do I see MRAs talking about the kids in these situations. It’s ALWAYS about how unfair things are for men and what horrible, trickster, lying bitches women are.

That’s how you can tell that MRAs don’t really care about this shit. Because they don’t even address the real issue: Being a parent means making the best decision for your child, even if it’s something that you don’t want to do.  And threatening to use your children to hurt the other parent is always shitty and always the sign of someone who doesn’t really give a shit about their children’s quality of life.

Christian Rock Band Preaches Hate Of LGBT Community During School Assembly, Tells Girls To Be Submissive To Husbands. →

    unfriendlyatheist:

    Holy shit this is surprising

When Dunkerton High School in Iowa invited a Christian rock band called Junkyard Prophet to perform during a school assembly this past Thursday, they never expected to get a hate filled sermon as part of the deal. But that’s exactly what happened.

According to the Lacrosse Tribune, the message was supposed “to be about bullying and making good choices,” such as being non-violent and against drugs and alcohol. “Instead, junior and senior high students at Dunkerton High School and faculty members said they were assaulted by the group’s extreme opinions on homosexuality and images of aborted fetuses,” along with messages against strong independent women.

After the band performed their music, they separated the boys, girls, and faculty in the building, which should have been an immediate red flag. According to witnesses, the band talked to the boys about the band’s Ten Commandments and talked about musicians that have died of drug overdose. The discussion with the girls was much different. The band told them “to save themselves for their husbands and assume a submissive role in the household. The leader in that effort also forced the young ladies to chant a manta of sorts about remaining pure” and would not allow any of them to leave the room.

One parent, Jennifer Littlefield, told the Tribune about a phone call she received from her daughter after the assembly. “They told my daughter, the girls, that they were going to have mud on their wedding dresses if they weren’t virgins. I couldn’t even understand her, she was crying so hard. They told these kids that anyone who was gay was going to die at the age of 42. It just blows me away that no one stopped this.”

According to LGBTQ Nation,”the band is part of the “You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International” Christian youth ministry founded by Bradlee Dean. Dean has advocated for imprisonment of gays and lesbians, and has said that gay men molest an average of 117 children “before they get caught,” and that Muslim nations that execute gays are more moral than American Christians.”

At the end of the day, Superintendent Jim Stanton told the students that the band doesn’t represent the beliefs of the administration and that the school is tolerant of those who are different and that diversity is celebrated in the school. But that doesn’t excuse the inaction of the school staff. They never should have allowed the students to be separated into groups and away from faculty members in the first place. It shows a complete lack of responsibility. And the very fact that they allowed a Christian band with dubious ties to a hate group to perform in front of students is disturbing. The problem is that the damage has already been done. Undoubtedly there are students that completely agree with what the band had to say, and now feel inspired to begin bullying others who don’t believe as they do. What this band did, is indoctrinate students with a message of hate. Clearly, this band holds the same beliefs as many in the Republican Party.

This is precisely why religion should remain outside of school. Though school officials expected a general message of  ’don’t do drugs and don’t be violent,’ the current wave of hatred spreading throughout the Christian organizations should have prompted school administrators to research the band’s associations. The school paid $1,500 for the band to perform. That’s tax payer dollars, folks. Tax dollars paid to a religiously affiliated group. That sounds very much like a violation of the religious freedom of students to me. The school didn’t have to invite this band. They could have hired a non-religious band to perform and stress the positive anti-drugs, anti-violence message the school had intended in the first place. Heck, they could have just delivered the message themselves. But they didn’t. They chose a religiously affiliated band with ties to a Christian hate group. This is why parents should bring lawsuits to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. This kind of hate speech should not be tolerated in our schools.

    "

I have been quiet about the r/atheism crap thus far, but back in October, I was raped, again. What made it different this time was that it was the 1st time it had happened since I realized I was an atheist. I didn’t have the Christian God, or my Pagan Gods and Goddesses to fall back on for help.

So I posted in r/atheism, basically asking for help. I was lost, and I didn’t know how to cope without some sort of religious influence. I wanted advice. It was my haven, a safe space to be me. I received about 100 responses over a week’s period, out of which only 2 were honest, helpful, and kind. The rest was shit like this:

You musta been asking for it.
    Your a whore.
    Drunk Bitch
    You probably deserved it.
What about the man who you are accusing, what about his feelings?
    ETC…………….

I hid the post and left r/atheism at the point, and I haven’t looked back since. I honestly expected better of the Atheist “community”.

"You know, something may go down tonight, but it ain’t going to be jobs, sweetheart."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to a female protester at a Mitt Romney campaign stop in New Hampshire.

Really? Let me put aside every other single four-letter word I want to say for a second. Gov. Christie, you are campaigning for another candidate. One you would like to see elected president. Throwing insulting sexual innuendo at the crowd is maybe not the best maneuver. It doesn’t give you a tough guy Jersey image or reflect well on Mitt. It just makes you look like a sweaty, vile, misogynistic pig.

Gov. Christie has bragged about how he’s had obscenities thrown at him as part of being from New Jersey. Standard cursing holds little power. Therefore, I’m going to get creative with my curse:

[TW: Domestic Violence] ‘I’ve got a surprise for you’: Husband blindfolds his wife…. and then chops off her fingers to stop her studying for a degree

    sageoflogic:

    danceswithfaeriesunderthemoon:

    sageoflogic:

    atheismfuckyeah:

A jealous husband is facing life in prison after chopping off his wife’s fingers because she began studying for a degree without his permission.

Rafiqul Islam, 30, blindfolded his wife Hawa Akhter, 21, and taped her mouth, telling her he was going to give her a surprise present.

Instead he made her hold out her hand and cut off all five fingers. One of his relatives then threw Ms Akhter’s fingers in the dustbin to ensure doctors could not reattach them.

Mr Islam, who is a migrant worker in the United Arab Emirates, had warned his wife there would ‘severe consequences’ if she did not give up her studies.

‘After he came back to Bangladesh, he wanted to have a discussion with me,’ Ms Akhter told The Times.

‘Suddenly, he blindfolded me and tied my hand. He also taped my mouth saying that he would give me some surprise gifts. But, instead he cut off my fingers.’

Mohammed Saluddin, the Bangladesh police chief said that Mr Islam had confessed after he was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration.

Human rights groups are demanding life imprisonment.

‘He was enraged. He was jealous because while he only had a grade eight standard education, she was off to college to pursue higher studies,’ said Mr Saluddin.

Ms Akhter says she is learning to write with her left hand and is determined to resume her studies. She is now back at her parent’s house.

The attack is the latest in a series of acts targeting educated women in the Muslim-majority company.

In June, an unemployed man gouged out the eyes of his wife, an assistant professor at Dhaka University, apparently because he could not stand her pursuing higher studies at a Canadian University.

    Daily Mail

A lovely bit of religious news to get all up in our atheist holiday celebrations and bring us crashing back to earth with the realisation that this shit still fucking goes on.

    ~Mooglets

This is terrible.. poor woman. But I also really don’t like what this is tagged with.

THIS IS NOT A PART OF ISLAM.

Stop making it seem like it is.

Christians shoot up abortion doctors. Not actually part of Christianity. But the religious CULTURE they grow up in says it is. The religious culture this man grew up in probably said “suppress women”. Is that part of mainstream Islam or just his culture? Probably just his culture. Does that mean Islam as a whole should get no blame? Well I still blame Christianity as an institution for shooting abortion doctors so I’m going to have to blame Islam as an idea for fostering a culture in which this is okay.

So the editors of the paper have released an apology of sorts.

    slightly-delusional:

    DEAR READERS:

The recent article has deeply offended many of you and we would like to sincerely apologize. We made a misjudgment; however, we stand by the publishing of the article due to our firm belief in free expression. The views expressed in any and all columns do not represent the Opinion Editor, Editor-In-Chief, The Editorial Board, The East Carolinian, or East Carolina University. We take full acceptance of the published article and regret that readers had access to the original, unedited format. The original edit was surfaced due to a staff member’s mistake. We are apologetic for the original article but will leave both sides of the Sound Off up in order for intelligent reader response. TEC will be devoting our Opinion page to the matter on Tuesday and look forward to  more reader emails. Ben Cochran has expressed his apologies as well and will be publishing a formal apology in the upcoming issue. We will also be addressing our reasoning and stance on the article as well as accepting all reader responses via email.

    Emphasis mine.

It’s good that they’re apologizing but they should NOT be standing by publishing trash like his article in the name of free expression. This shit is bullshit.
